Liming · I''ve got a strap-on boss with 40mm grommet for a 110mm soil pipe. I''ve gonna fit it tomorrow, but I''m still a bit unsure how big to drill the hole in the soil pipe. On the inside of the boss is a raised lip that I''m assuming will fit inside the hole? I''d be grateful if someone can please tell me how big to drill the hole in the soil pipe?
Liming · Like tjh said, you can just drill the head of the screw off. Use a drill bit equal in size to the shank of the screw. Center it right in the messed up Phillips slots, and start drilling. In a few seconds the head will pop off onto the drill bit. Then pull the strap button off and use some pliers to grab the remains of the screw and turn it out.
It consists of a drill bit of the right diameter for Stew-Mac strap buttons, and also a sort of tap, which you wrench down into the hole you have drilled to cut out proper thread-space. Keep doing this till you find a bit that is just slightly smaller in girth than your screw. It needs to be able to bite into the wood a bit.
Liming · Most strap button screws have a standard size so further modification should not be needed. If you notice a drastic size difference, you may need to drill your hole a bit bigger to match the new screw. If the new screw is too small for the hole, you may need to …

Liming · Selecting the drill bit. The goal is to drill a hole that’s slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the screw. If you use a drill bit that’s too big, the screw will strip the wood and the button will not hold properly. Most strap button screws are relatively close in size…
Liming · The flat part of the heel on a Gibson is perfect for a strap button. As others have mentioned, just drill a pilot hole and you should have no problem doing it yourself. If the screw is too small for this, look for a drill bit that is about 30% smaller than the major diameter size. I never rely on my eyeballs for this, or on the manufacturer’s dimensions stamped on the bit. I always use my caliper to measure both the screw and the bit. Measuring a screw’s “root”, or “minor” diameter.
